in this ultimate dreadlock wrap guide we are going to share below how to wrap your dreads in many different ways you can choose from.

How To Wrap Rasta Hair

Rasta hair is a religious symbol in Rastafarianism. This style is all about connecting with African roots and letting your natural hair grow without interference.

These dreads are freeform style, as it’s particularly important not to use any unnatural techniques to create them. These types of dreads can’t be rubbed, cut or rolled either; however, they can be washed as usual.

  • First, tie your dreads or use a dreadlocks cap to secure your locs.
  • Take the cloth and fold an insignificant piece to the top- this folded piece will rest on your forehead.
  • Rest the cloth on your forehead and ensure the two ends are even then, press down the cloth on your head so it is nice and smooth.
  • Cross the two ends at the back of your head and pull, then wrap and tuck both sides.
  • There you go, a simple but effective head wrap.

How To Wrap Dreads With Thread String

  1. Grab your thread or a piece of string then, measure out 3x the length of your dreads for each strand of thread.
  2. Tie your string or thread to the very top of your dreads. (The closer you can get to your scalp, the better.) Double or even triple knot it.
  3. Choose a string or thread that you want to use to wrap your hair. Then, proceed to wrap the strands tightly around both the dreads and the other unused thread or string. Keep wrapping until you get a nice section of wrapped hair.
  4. When you’re finished with one section of dreads wrap and want to change colors, simply tie your 1-2 strands with a knot around your dreads + other unused strands. This will end one section.
  5. Then, simply choose another strands and begin wrapping again. Tie off when you’re done with that section.
Keep repeating this process of wrapping + tying off sections until the majority of your dreads is wrapped. Do a double/triple knot to secure the final strings to your dreads.

How To Wrap Dreads At Night

Okay, so I’m going to show you how to wrap your dreads at night. I’m going to use a basic, standard scarf, head scarf rather, that you can get at any beauty supply or any department store.

So the first thing you do is usually kind of square shaped. You take it in a rectangle or triangle rather, shape. Put the two ends together to get a shape something like this. The two ends are the ends you’re going to tie your knot and get your most tension.

You want to first put the scarf on to of your head and kind of measure out how much length you’re going to need in the back to kind of cover your dreads whether they’re down or up.

So since I’m fully covering my dreads, I’m going to take both of the two ends, put them together and tie it. I’m going to tie it loosely at first and make sure I get my hairline covered. I like to start with covering the ears and then as it gets tighter you can lift it over your ears.

So you want to tie it as tight as you can stand it, but tight enough where it stays in place. With the ends, you can either bring them around and tie your knot up front or you can tie a nice little knot in the back.

It has to be a knot you can actually sleep on, so you don’t want to get too fancy with your knotting. And then I usually just tuck the knot underneath. Make sure it’s secure. Like I say, you can pull your ears out if you don’t like the ears to be covered.

And another thing you can do if you like to toss and turn a lot in your sleep, you can go over the top of your scarf with a headband. That way that secures the scarf.

You have your nice silk and satin up against your actual hair, because you want to use a scarf that is either silk or satin. That’s better for the hair. It keeps the oils in your hair. It won’t cause your hair to dry out as much.

So even with using a headband, you want to be sure to have the scarf up against your actual hairline. And that is how you wrap your dreads at night.

How to Wrap Dreads With Hemp

Hemp is a natural fiber that can be used to create dread wraps. It is also a renewable resource that will not harm the Earth.

Hemp is a great material for dreadlocks because it is durable and doesn’t break as easily. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to wrap dreads with hemp:

1. Take a section of hemp, about 8 inches long

2. Tie it into a knot at the end

3. Twist the knot around your hair to secure it in place

4. Roll the rest of the hemp into a ball and tie it in another knot

5. Repeat steps 2-4 until you have dreads

Hemp can be spun into yarn or woven into cloth, which are then used for clothing, blankets, and other products.

Create your own wrapped dreads by either crossing the hemp around the dread or tightly wrapping part or all of the hair. follow this video tutorial for a visual presentation.

How To Wrap Dreads With Yarn

Yarn serves the same purpose as wool when it comes to wrapping your locs. However, ‘yarn’ can refer to any kind of material or thread, while wool refers specifically to sheep’s wool. If you’re vegan and don’t wear animal-derived fabrics, synthetic yarn is for you.

It will give you hair all the same benefits of wool wraps, and it also comes in a vast variety of textures and colors. It can also be a good option if you have a wool allergy.

  1. Define the desired length of dreads, double it and cut the yarn into several dozens of equal pieces.
  2. Take 2-5 pieces of yarn into one hand, the same number into the other hand (the more pieces the thicker the loc).
  3. Link them together like a chain (it is also called the ‘T-shape’).
  4. As it is a protective hairstyle, moisturize hair before creating dreads.
  5. Take a strand of your hair (you may twist it if you wish), place the center of the T-shaped yarn under it.
  6. Starting from the roots plait a regular 3-strand braid.
  7. You may braid till the end or stop half way — it doesn’t matter.
  8. Take 3-4 pieces of yarn and wrap them around the braid. Repeat wrapping until you reach the end of the strand.
  9. When you reach the end, braid the rest of the hair 2-3 times and tie into a knot.
  10. Cut off the excess pieces with scissors, burn the tip of each loc.
